Rock & Coal Newsletter: September

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I hope all CMA members are having a productive summer, as your association has been hard at work representing Colorado’s mining industry.

We were very pleased to learn from the Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety that Colorado coal production increased a million tons during the first quarter of 2017. Of course, we acknowledge this increase comes after a horrific 2016 which saw production of Colorado coal fall 30 percent. Still, despite the cessation of the New Horizon mine near Nucla, it’s encouraging to see an upswing in production.

Golf—Thank you to all the sponsors and members who participated in the CMA Golf Tournament at Legacy Ridge. We were pleased this year to contribute proceeds to the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation. Thanks also to the CMA Golf Committee, which worked hard to recruit sponsors and golfers! Thank you Jill Nelson, George Byers and Tom White for your hard work!

120th National Western Mining Conference—Details are being finalized for the 120th National Western Mining Conference and Exhibition scheduled for April 3-5. We expect to have an exciting conference program featuring topics covering technology, sustainability and reports from Colorado’s mining operations.

CMA Staff Update—Finally, I hope you will have a chance to meet Stephanie Shark, CMA’s Director of Marketing and Membership. Stephanie has hit the ground running implementing CMA’s new marketing and membership program as well as planning the logistics of the 2018 Conference.

In September, Allison Wickham will be joining our staff as Membership Coordinator. Allison is an exceptionally talented professional with both a strong administrative and trade association background.

Sincerely,
Stan Dempsey, Jr. President

CMA GOLF TOURNAMENT

On Friday, August 4th, golfers filled the course at Legacy Ridge in Westminster, for a wonderful day of golf. Fun was had by all, but more importantly, proceeds from this tournament provided $5,000 to support the activities of the CMA Education Foundation!

Thank You Sponsors

A “GO TO PEOPLE” MINERAL EDUCATION PROJECT

The Colorado Mining Exhibit Foundation (CMEF), in cooperation with the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) updated the large computerized, interactive Coal exhibit at the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) in Leadville, CO.  Mine land reclamation information and graphics were added plus information on how students and teachers could get more modern public education material.

About 28,000 visitors tour the museum each year, mostly in the summer, plus dozens of school groups take tours each spring and fall.

Future outreach projects will include more information and handouts on the theme: The Importance of Minerals and Mining to a Strong America.
