As it tries to create ever more incentives for renewable energy development, the Obama administration can’t get out of its own way. That was the message NMA President and CEO Hal Quinn and Colorado Mining Association President Stuart Sanderson left with readers of the Pueblo Chieftain last week. In a co-authored editorial, the two mining executives underscored the futility of withdrawing hundreds of thousands of acres of federal land for exclusive use by the renewable industry while denying mining for the very minerals that are essential for solar and wind power. This summer, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) blocked mining claims on 300,000 acres in Colorado and across the West in a bid to advance solar development. “That hampers development of the very minerals integral to solar technology,” said the pair.
