 NWMA SEEKS GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS MANAGER

JOB OPPORTUNITY – The Northwest Mining Association, a 117 year-old non-profit trade association located in Spokane, WA, with 2,300 members in 44 states, is seeking a Government Affairs Manager to work with the Executive Director to manage the Association’s policies and objectives involving state and federal government affairs, analyze the impact of legislative and regulatory proposals and help develop appropriate responses and positions.

The Government Affairs Manager works closely with the Executive Director and the Association’s standing committees on federal Mining Law, public lands, critical and strategic minerals, environmental, health and safety, permitting, public outreach and other issues impacting its members at both the federal and state levels.

DESIRED PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • An ability to work as a team player in a small office of less than 6 employees
  • A desire to support environmentally and socially responsible natural resource development
  • An understanding of the importance of producing domestic minerals to our Nation’s national and economic security
  • A desire to be involved in shaping public policy issues affecting the domestic hardrock mining industry
  • Willing to travel for meetings with elected officials and policymakers

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

  • College degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities and good computer/information technology skills
  • Thorough understanding of legislative and regulatory processes
  • An ability to work with Association members and staff to formulate Association policies, position papers and responses to state and federal legislative and regulatory proposals
  • An ability to Staff the various standing committees of the Association
  • An ability to write articles for the Association’s newsletter on the various legislative and regulatory issues affecting its members
  • Experience with advocacy, media relations and influencing public opinion helpful

  • Market-based salary, negotiable based on education, experience, and other qualifications

Certified Mine Foreman, Colorado

Geotemps is urgently seeking a Certified Mine Foreman for their client company in Colorado.  This is a Direct Hire position, not a temporary assignment.  The successful candidate will have 10+ years of experience in surface coal mining or related mining experience.  Underground coal experience is a plus.  Degree is not required.  This candidate will be a Certified Mine Foreman in the State of Colorado.  This is a 6 month project outside of Durango, Colorado.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to continue on with this company at this project as well as others.   A vehicle will be provided and per diem.  Pay starts at $52,000 annually depending on experience.

Utah Mining Association President


Utah Mining Association President Todd Bingham has announced his resignation to accept a similar position at the Utah Manufacturers Association.  Todd has served the mining industry well during his tenure and UMA anticipates continued mutually beneficial association with him as he accepts his new employment.  We wish him success in his new position.

UMA Chairman Bryan Nielson has appointed a search committee, chaired by David R. Bird, and is seeking qualified applicants for the position of President.  This is a full-time, paid position with a yearly salary range of $85,000 to $105,000 based upon qualifications plus a potential annual bonus up to 20% of salary based upon performance.  The benefit package includes Association paid medical, dental and vision insurance (with family deductibles); a $750 monthly car allowance, plus partial business mileage reimbursement; and payment of 7-10% of gross salary into a tax deferred retirement account.  The UMA requires that its President will devote his/her full time to the position and will not have any outside lobbying contracts.

Qualified applicants should have experience working with legislators and other public officials (preferably in Utah), administering a trade association and working with a Board, educating the public about the importance of natural resources and advancing a mining education program. Mining experience is beneficial, but not a prerequisite.   The successful applicant must have integrity, poise, maturity and credibility, and demonstrate good writing, speaking, public relations, organizational, budgeting, coalition building and interpersonal skills.

Mining Engineer – Ventilation

Stellar Recruitment has partnered with a natural resources company who has been successfully managing and operating several mining and processing facilities across the United States.  They currently have a requirement for a Mining Engineer – Ventilation at their longwall operation in Colorado’s western region.   

As the Mining Engineer – Ventilation, you will report into the Chief Engineer and provide expert engineering and management to the mine’s ventilation system to provide fresh, cool air to the miners. 

Your duties will include:

  • Manage mine ventilation systems and maintain airflows throughout the underground workings and planning for future developments
  • Providing ventilation emergency plans and all other ventilation related planning and procedures
  • Monitoring, measuring and reporting on air quality
  • Ensure the sites ventilation systems and practices are compliant with relevant safety requirements
  • Work collaboratively technical, production, and trades staff working on the ventilation system
  • Stay up-to-date with technological advances, managing the implementation of improvements to the sites ventilation systems

The main challenges in this role come with mining an old, gassy mine and as such will require the following attributes:

  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Proven understanding of underground mine engineering
  • Proven mine ventilation engineering experience within a longwall environment
  • Well-developed communication and leadership skills
  • Pro-active approach to developing and improving processes
  • Excellent awareness of related best-practice and regulatory requirements in the mining production/operations environment, and a good awareness of related H&S requirements
  • Confidence to make key decisions through sound experience and logic

The salary range is between $70,000 up to $80,000, plus discretionary bonus, dental, medical and life cover, 401K, and relocation assistance.
